ROOM 21's KNET PAGE!

Hi parents and caregivers..

Room 21 has a new KNET page under www.marshall.knowledge.net.nz
To log on and catch up with what's happening please use your own parent log on or alternatively you can log on with your child's username.

Students will be updating their own pages as we learn to use knowledge net. It is very exciting for us here in Room 21 and we seem to be getting the hang of it quickly :)

We look forward to you logging on and checking out what's happening in class and at Marshall Laing!

Pictures of our Chinese string game can now be viewed and our powerpoints will be up shortly. Yay!

We have been learning about simple machines! For our homework we were able to use our knowledge of wedges, wheels and axles, levers, pulleys, screws and inclined planes to create a playground! Here are some of our designs!

Thursday, April 26, 2012

Welcome back it's Term 2 and we're ready to roll again!

Things to note about our learning!

Our Inquiry topic is 'Simple Machines'. We will be learning about simple, compound and complex machines and then hopefully use some of our skills to design, invent and create our very own machine to display at our Invention Convention coming up this term! We can't wait to show off our designs and write about them :)

To help us with our inventions we will be learning a number of 3D art techniques. Alongside this we will be learning how to make a poi. So please bring in the following materials to create your poi. You will need:
  • a plastic bag,
  • wool or thick string (preferably two different colours),
  • a rubber band,
  • a piece of fabric or old stockings (mum's ones will do)
  • and some newspaper
We have just sat our IKAN knowledge test. Well done to those students who achieved their goal and were better than before. Current National Standards expect all Year 4 students to reach stage 5 and Year 5 students to reach stage 6 by the end of this year. So keep working on those next steps discussed during our three way conferences!

A reminder to keep updating your reading log every day and complete your Mathletics and/or Sumdog activities also don't forget to mark your spelling words in your notebook and earn your 100 points each fortnight for homework!

You can do it! This year we will achieve our goals!

Miss M soon to be Mrs Kasupene :) hehe

2012 is here!

A big welcome to the new students and families of Room 21!
I hope you've had a great holiday and are ready to get back into things at MLPS.

India:
I have recently been away in India visiting a number of children's homes and a couple schools across 3 states of Southern India, Andra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. It was a great time away and I'd like to take this opportunity to thank those who turned out in support of our Art Gallery Fundraiser last year!

The children all received a small gift, consisting of items such as small soft toy or a car for the boys, pencils,  pens, stickers, balloons, pens, notebooks, soap, face cloths, hair clips etc etc...

We were able to put some the fundraised money to good use... In Andra Pradesh we helped pay for 2 new urgently needed tyres for the children's home jeep. In Chennai we contributed to a new stove for the children's home (which due to overuse blew up). We also were able to give a love offering to one of the leper colonies in Bangalore who with the help of GNL supporters are no longer homeless but  are staying in a nice rental home. So a big thank you once again.

Learning:
School has started and we are here to learn, so please do check in from time to time to find out what we are getting up to and get the latest and greatest updates from behind the scenes of Room 21!

Homework/Spelling:
Homework sheets and spelling lists went out today. Spelling lists will be sent out weekly. Students will be expected to be tested daily and record their results in their spelling notebook. It is fine for an older brother/sister or sibling to test them :)

Homework is due fortnightly. All students are expected to complete a total of 100 points every fortnight. These will be buddy marked in class and the points recorded. It is each students responsibility to ask questions and find out all they need to know in order to complete each task and submit their homework in on time. All work including homework should be completed with a high standard of presentation and effort.

Swimming:
Swimming for Room 21 will take place on Monday and Wednesday. Please encourage your child to participate in these lessons as the swimming season is short and soon over. I will be assessing students on their basic swimming ability.

Stationery:
By this stage students should have a full set of stationery. We are starting to get into the full swing of our class programme so all books, pencils etc are required.

Botanical Garden Visit:
This is coming up next week on Thursday 23 February. Please ensure you have returned your child's permission slip and money to the office before this date.

3 Way Conferences:
We are beginning to prepare for our meeting with parents, students and myself. The students of Room 21 will be leading this meeting so as a reminder your child will need to be present at the interview. We can't wait to share their goals and next steps with you.

Well that's it for now...

If you have any questions or queries please don't hesitate to come and see me or email me on janem@marshall.school.nz

Thanks :)

MEDIA PRESS RELEASE - “STEREOTYPE”
12pm 1st January 2012

New Zealand - Youth Empire presents their new single “Stereotype” announcing the release of the song and music video at midnight on the 1/1/12

Youth Empire is an independent entity that is not government-funded run by Tumehe Rongonui.
Following their internet parody pop hit “Nek Minnit” which has received over 100,000 You-tube hits, TV and Radio play, it hit #30 on the NZ iTunes Charts and #11 on the RIANZ NZ Singles Chart 2011 this month. Youth Empire also produced the song “Change” which 50% of all the proceeds are being donated to the charity Youthline NZ.

This song “Stereotype” is about putting people in a box because of appearances, culture, status, religion or race. The band Youth Empire are a mix of cultures in themselves who can't stand the prejudice that leads people to put others down. Tumehe says “I'm Greek Maori, she's German Maori, he's Samoan, she's Tongan, he's Lebonese, he's Muslim, she's a policewoman, he's a nerd, they're Filipino and European and we're all New Zealanders.”

The words of the song may seem controversial to some, but this song challenges the mindsets we have about each other. “It's funny and sarcastic, because we know – not everyone who wears a turban is a terrorist, not every Asian is a bad driver, not every Maori or Pacific Islander is going to be a criminal. And yet these are the types of stereotypes that float around in our society still.”

Everyone has been made fun of, shut up and shut off but it's time to stand up for the underdogs and those who are being discriminated against... we are all individuals that are original. We decide who we are, not society.

Thanks to Miss Malloy's Class at Marshall Laing Primary!
